I guess they decided to use my picture at the last minute, because I just receive the copy of the Canadian Geographic with my stock photo in it. So here is the photo of my humbling experience.
Still digging the archive in search of valuable photo to add to my stock collection. Today’s digging is some wildlife in the Rocky mountain.
Last week, Cindy and I went to Montreal. Beside spending 500$ in 15 minutes at L.L. Lauzeau and visiting the WorldPress exposition, I spent some time with Martin Benois, teacher at the CEGEP du Vieux Montreal in the photography department.
Martin wanted to meet me do to a podcast for the blog he his doing for his class.

What is the most prestigious magazine for a photographer? The one that all of us (not so) secretly dream to be published in? National Geographic, of course.
I don’t think they are related, but Canadian Geographic is the Canadian counterpart of NG magazine. Everyone want to have « Canadian Geographic » in their client list.
So… I just got a picture picked up by Canadian Geographic from my archive that will be published in an upcoming issue.
Was it shot with my $5000 Mark II, my $2000 70-200 f2.8 with a $150 polarizing filter, all of this standing on a $250 tripod?
Nope.
I shot it with a $400 point and shot camera, about 4 years ago. Long before I even add the idea I could be a professional photographer… On top of that, I did not have the original file, so they had to use the 800px width “saved for web” photo, a 100kb file.
Humbling.
The lesson for everyone here is: My photo was not spectacular. Fare from it. but they could not find better. they needed it. Having the best picture is one thing. Having it available for the whole word to see and find is almost as important.
Must… not… HATE… microstock… A lots of reading if you follow every link, but it is a must if you consider selling stock photos thru microstock agency.
As you have hopefully noticed, I cover a lot of Quebec Remparts game this year. Actually, I’m planning to cover them all. On top of getting experience and maybe adding a picture or two in my portfolio, I’m slowly building a nice collection of young hockey prospect stock photos.
