The tiny, picturesque village of St-Antoine-de-Tilly has a secret.
In a nondescript warehouse on the outskirts of town, some 40 kilometres southwest of Quebec City, there is a stash of maple syrup.
A 6.3-million-kilogram stash of maple syrup, to be exact.

Together, these stockpiles are officially called the International Strategic Reserve, which works like a Fort Knox for Canada’s most-cherished breakfast condiment – a massive arsenal of sweet, liquid gold ready to be deployed to feed a rise in global demand while maintaining price stability.

I wanted to go out of my comfort zone for this portrait. I realized that I used a little but too often my umbrellas to soften the light. So hard light it would be for this one.
I used a gridded flash aimed at the world map to create the vignette around it. I then gridded a second flash toward the subject face, creating a dramatic light that went well with the story.
Pour la troisième fois je me suis rendu au bureau du ministre de la santé pour faire un portrait. Et pour la deuxième fois c’était pour l’actuel ministre Bolduc. Dans une toute petite pièce, il faut donc trouver quelque chose de nouveau à faire.
Il est toujours rassurant lorsque le sujet se souvient de toi et dit avoir beaucoup apprécié la séance précédente, cela met la personne immédiatement en confiance. J’ai donc débuté en prenant des photos candides du ministre alors qu’il répondait aux questions des journalistes, puis nous y sommes allé d’une de quelques portraits dirigés. L’interview s’étant prolongé et le ministre devant quitter pour un meeting, le portrait s’est fait en environs 2 minutes.
